Laurelie (Fox) Welday

Laurelie (Fox) Welday, 79, of Smithfield, OH, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville, OH from the effects of lung cancer.

Born in 1936 to C. Clair and Mildred Fox, Lauri grew up in then-rural Westlake, OH. She studied at Kent State Univ., earning an A.A. in art and B.A. in social work, and married Robert R. Flood in 1959. The marriage was later annulled, but they remained good friends. Lauri married John C. Welday in 1978 and moved to the Welday Orchard in Smithfield.

A devout Catholic and devoted social worker, Lauri was known for her dedication to others, great rapport, and delightful humor. Highlights of her career include working for the Society for the Blind, Cleveland; as executive director of the American Cancer Society in Jefferson County; and in crisis management for Jefferson County.

Lauri leaves behind daughter, Melinda Flood Uschold, son-in-law, David Uschold; son A. James Flood, daughter-in-law Jeanette A. Flood, grandchildren Elizabeth, Emily, Alicia, Alexander, Isabelle and Angelie Flood; sister Joann, nephews Philip and David; sister Marjorie, nieces and nephews Jessica, Jonathan, Jhena and Joseph. She was also a favorite aunt to her Flood, Farrell, and Hendrickson nieces and nephews. A loving and much beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, she will be sorely missed.

Visitation was held at 9:15 am, followed by Mass at 10 am at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Dillonvale, OH, on Monday, April 25, 2016. The Memorial Mass for Lauri will be held on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10 am at St. Clement Church in Lakewood, OH (near Cleveland). A reception will follow in the church hall.

Arrangements for Lauri are in the care of the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield.
