Samuel Bert Shevelow, Sr., 82, of Toronto, OH, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 in the Trinity Medical West in Steubenville, OH.

He was born Sept. 25, 1931 in Steubenville, OH, son of the late Frank and Daisy (Shepherd) Shevelow.

Sam was a 1949 graduate of Toronto High School. He was a member of the Toronto Nazarene Church, serving faithfully in several positions, most recently as a Sunday School Teacher. Sam also served in the US Army in the Korean Conflict. After working 51 years with the Columbia Gas Company of Ohio, Sam retired in 2000.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Shevelow Starr; his sisters, Lillian Shevelow, Rosemary Smith and Olga (Jim) Stone; his brother, George Shevelow and his sister in law, Mary Eleanor ‘Sis’ Shevelow.

Sam is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mary (Richman) Shevelow; his daughter, Susette (Doug) Hannan and his son, Sam, Jr. all of Toronto, his son Frank (Darla) Shevelow of Hilliard, OH, his son Scott Shevelow, brother Richard Shevelow, son in law Dave Starr and brother in law Don Smith all of Toronto, sister in law Jane Shevelow of Miamisburg, OH. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Michelle Tice, Travis Tice, Lauren, Samuel and Sarah Shevelow and four step grandsons, Eric Tice, Aaron and Mark Soper and Adam Hannan.   

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 1-3 & 6-8 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH. A Celebration of Sam’s Life and Journey Home will be held on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Toronto Nazarene Church on Findley St. at 11 am. Rev. Eric Frey will officiate the service and burial will follow in Toronto Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sam’s memory to Toronto Nazarene Church 505 Findley St. Toronto, OH 43964 or the Leukemia Society. Condolences may be offered on our website www.jefosterfh.com.
