Charles L. Stingle, Sr., 92, of Smithfield, OH, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 in the Valley Hospice Care Center South (Liza’s Place) in Wheeling, WV.
Charlie was born July 15, 1925 in Dillonvale, OH, son of the late Charles F. Stingle and Mildred (Rogers) McIntire.
He was retired from the Norfolk Southern Rail Road where he worked as an Engineer and was the Local Union Chairman for 30 years.
Charlie bought the Stingle Family Farm in Smithfield in 1957. He was a self-employed farmer who started in the Pony business and then went on to raise and show Belgians for the past 53 years. He also judged various horse shows across the country. He was a member of the Ohio Belgian Breeders Association and the Belgian Draft Horse Corp. of America.
He founded the Golden Horseshoe 4H Club in 1963. Charlie was a member of the Jefferson Co. Fair Board and the Ohio Belgian Breeders Assoc. and Belgian Corp. of America. He was a 50-year member of the Smithfield Masonic Lodge F&AM #182 where he was Past Master in 1975 and 2006. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville and the York Rite.
Charlie was a Veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post #888.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Kay and his son, Gary Lee and his two sisters, Lucille Woods and Evelyn Levi Ponti.
Charlie leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Dortha A. “Toots” (Finney) Stingle whom he married Nov. 22, 1947; his children, Frederic (Leslie) Stingle and Charles Stingle, Jr. both of Smithfield, Sandy (Greg) Smith of Adena, OH and Sonya (Jim) Vicker of St. Clairsville, OH; his sister, Dorothy Vargo of Rayland, OH; his 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday evening, Feb. 20, from 5-8 pm and again on Wednesday from 1-3 & 5-8 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home 107 Hill St. in Smithfield. His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 12 noon at the funeral home with Kenny Kourim officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove, OH.
Military Honors will be provided at the cemetery by the Piney Fork American Legion. A Masonic Service will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm at the funeral home.
