To John's wife, children, and extended family,
I knew John when he first came to Dartmouth College as its first Strength and Conditioning Coach. He was the real deal. Personable, dedicated, knowledgeable, intense, motivated, and had a great sense of humor. His ways of doing things took time and individual effort to achieve. Some people were not ready for it. I will say that he knew his craft as we trained together for over a year after I was kicked out of Dartmouth for a year for poor academic performance. Football and training with John were what kept me going after I, interestingly enough, had lost my father, George may he rest in peace, in May of 1985. If not for training one-on-one with John I do not believe I would have gotten out of the "bed" where I slept in an old dive house along the Connecticut River in Vermont. He had me in the best condition of my life as we took turns training each other three or four days a week. It hurt. The first time he trained me I basically was a wet noodle who felt very much like emptying my stomach of its contents. I lay on the concrete floor outside the primitive attic weightroom at Davis Varsity house for a while until I reached a point where I could ease myself down the stairs to go eat some lunch. He knew his craft then and, obviously, he stayed informed along the years he worked in S & C. We spoke on the phone in April of 2015 about many things, including some absolutely hilarious stories about the Penguins and a radio show as well as his last days at Dartmouth under a new regime.
John, I will miss having the opportunity to see you in person. I am grateful to have worked with him. He, like my father, lived a good life. I will continue to pray for the repose of his soul. He told me last April "keep at it" in regards to returning to coaching football. You have my word, John. I will.

I had a surprise visit with John on the phone while expressing regrets because I couldn't attend the 1974 football team reunion last fall. In seconds the years melted away as we talked about family and work. The brief visit has been a cherished memory. God bless and keep you and your family, John.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We had recently caught up about family and friends when John checked in to see if the Houston floods had any impact on my family. As always he shared humorous stories about Jordan and Jared and how proud he was of them. Thoughts and prayers to you all.

I am so saddened to hear that John passed away - especially so suddenly. Johns dad was my godfather and I loved both Rich & Helen so very much - they were always so proud of all of their children. May God Bless all of you and your families at this time of sorrow. I am sorry that I was unable to pay my respects in person. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

John was one of the first to teach me through his actions, that a person can be both strong and aggressive, yet warm and kind and loving. He had a delightfully skewed sense of humor, old fashioned work ethic and a soft spot for the underdog.
Football--wise, the guy could deliver a blow...I mean when he hit you, you stayed hit. He would knock you back to Ohio. Truth-be-told, he wasn't the fastest lineman--he used to complain over them Gassers: When am I ever gonna have to run 200 yards?! But that patch of groud he lined up on--he owned it. Joe would call him "As tough as any lineman we've had here." and I know Joe had enormous admiration for his True Grit. That old line about "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."; that was Big John. Hard Workin' John better pull your britches up, spit on your hand, rub 'em on your knees..."
I hope the love & admiration the Penn State Football Letterman had for John comes through these rough words.
Who's tougher than John Welday?

Dear Jodi and Family, My heart goes out to you at this difficult time of losing a special loved one, you have our deepest symphony. My name is Sharon Parsons now, but I used to work with your Mom at OVH, she worked the switchboard, and I worked admitting and ER registration. At times I also worked switchboard, but my name was Sharon Hutchison then. My husband Donald E Parsons, graduated with John, and had fond memories of him, and mentioned how great he was at football when I told Donald about John passing. Your Mom even called me once with tickets to a Pens game, all those years ago, I am a huge fan, but I wasn't home at the time. She was also a special lady. Bless you and your sons and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sharon and Donald E Parsons

Today I was informed of John's passing by a former Penn State Football player. My condolences to the entire family. I was a strength and conditioning coach for 36 years. I was the head strength coach at Penn State from 1977 through the 1981 season. I hired John to become my assistant at Penn State. I recommended him for several head coaching jobs because he was one of the young bright lights in our profession. I maitained a personal and professional relationship with John throughout my 36 year career. John was one of the few professionals I would contact on multiple occasions to obtain his opinion on multiple topics. He was extremely intelligent, an innovator, and always relied upon evidenced based information. I will truly miss him for his professional guidance and advice, more important I will miss him more as a long-time friend. My last conversation with him was just a couple weeks ago. Will miss you and love you like a brother John.
Dan Riley
P.S. John always talked about his respect and fondness for Toronto High School Athletics. My wife Brenda and I will make a donation in John's name.

Dear Welday family,
I don't know if John could ever fully understand the impact his generosity had on me and my personal and professional development.
In 1992, I was a shy and awkward 19-year-old intern at WTOV. I had just completed my first year of journalism school and was still soaring over the Penguins' back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships.
When I heard John was bringing the Cup to Toronto, I asked Bill Phillips if I could tag along. I was the only hockey fan in my high school and I never imagined I'd ever see the Cup with my own eyes. When John handed the trophy to me and invited me to take a drink from its bowl, I think I blacked out for a second. Apart from my wedding day and the births of my children, that was the greatest moment of my life. Even now, almost 25 years later, I can remember every detail.
I covered a lot of sad stories that summer (and across my 17-year career in broadcasting), but that moment of pure joy, without question, verified that I was in a line of work that would also allow me to witness great triumphs up close. It also very quickly helped me to understand what it means to be a part of the Ohio Valley community.
Of course, it made for a great personal memory, but the real lesson it taught me was that our accomplishments and successes are much sweeter when they're shared with the people who supported us on the journey.
John didn't bring the Cup to Toronto to show it off. He brought it there to share the victory with his hometown. When I tell my kids the story (and believe me, I tell it all the time), I make certain that's the part they remember.
Later this week, I'm taking my daughter (a third-generation Pens fan) to Consol Energy Center to see the Cup. I will proudly point out John's name to her and remind her again about how he shared that accomplishment with so many people--including a shy and awkward kid that he didn't know.
I hope that I thanked John profusely back in 1992--I'm pretty sure that I did--but I could have thanked him every day for a thousand years and still not adequately conveyed my gratitude.
If he had that kind of impact on me in the span of five minutes, then I know he meant infinitely more to the people with whom he shared his life. I sure am grateful that he played such an important role in mine.
My heart is with all of you.
Much love,
Eric, Tracy, Arden, and Benjamin Minor

What a tragic loss to his family, friends, and community.
Such a very very nice man
I got to hold and take pictures with The Stanley Cup because he never forgot his hometown pride or its people.

Jodie, and family, we are so very sorry for your loss . John was a super guy. I was seeing him out at planet fitness, riding a bike. sometimes you could see the pain in his face because of his leg. bUt John is well now and in a better happy place with his parents. threw your love and memories, John will always live on within your hearts till you see him again. take it a day at a time is my best advice. R.I.P. John, my prayers are with you all.

Words really can't express how sorry we are for your loss. He was a great friend & mentor. He will be deeply missed by us. Hard to believe we just had lunch with him on this past Thursday. We were laughing & just telling stories like normal.
