Alberta Helen (Harris) Dixon, 79, of Smithfield, OH, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 in the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.Alberta was born on March, 26, 1933 in Bradley, OH, daughter of the late Thomas W., Sr. and Christine (Hemphill) Harris.Alberta was a member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Smithfield where she was a Stewart and Stewardess, on the Finance Committee, Missionary President, and a member of the Lay Organization; she became a Life-Time member of the NAACP serving as Steubenville's Chapter President for 12 years, Past Director of the Steubenville Lioness, Past Worthy Matron Eastern Star Chapter 22 in Steubenville, OH.Alberta served her country in the United States Air Corp/Air Force during the Korean War as an Airman 1st Class, she then went on to become a Life-Time member of the Smithfield Legion Post 396 where she was a Past Commander; she was also Past Commander of the American Legion District 10. Alberta retired from the Social Security Administration in Steubenville where she worked as a Claims Representative.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.Alberta is survived by her husband, Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. William Dixon of home whom she married on July 24, 1954; her daughter Diane Dixon Montgomery (Henry) of Smithfield, OH; son William Craig (Tamerah) Dixon of Steubenville, OH; her grandchildren, Stephanie, Naomi and Jacob Montgomery and Bria and Mara Dixon; her great-grandchild Janiyah Dodd; brother Robert (Jean) Harris of Wintersville, sister Bernice Wilson of Columbus, sister Virginia (Ernest) Peterson of Wintersville, brother Clarence (Elizabeth) Harris and brother Richard (Etta) Harris all of Smithfield, OH. Alberta also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.Visitation for Alberta will be held on Tuesday, February 26 from 1-3 and 6-8pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home 107 Hill St. in Smithfield, OH. Services will be held for Alberta on Wednesday at 11am at the Smithfield Christian Church with Rev. L. Anthony Gatewood presiding. Military Honors will be presented following services at the Church by the local American Legion Posts. Burial will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.Condolences may be offered to the family on our website www.jefosterfh.com
