Bessie E. McCoy, 92, of Smithfield, OH, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2008 at her home. Bessie was born May 4, 1916 in Monroe County, daughter of the late Gilmore and Louise Carpenter Stephen. Bessie previously worked at the Welday's Orchard in Smithfield and retired from the Smithfield Elementary School as a Custodian. She was a member of the Smithfield Christian Church, the Mingo Sportsman's Club and the Smithfield Vol. Fire Dept. Auxiliary. Bessie loved gardening, raising her flowers and she was an avid baker and cook.In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death by her husband Leland, who passed away in 1983,three sisters, Florence Farnsworth, Leota Adams and Pauline Carr; one brother Clayton Stephen.Bessie is survived by her three sons, Larry McCoy and Lamont (Esther) McCoy all of Smithfield and Buddy McCoy of Dover, OH. Bessie is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation for Bessie will be held on Saturday, December 20 from 4-8pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH. Bessie's funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 21 at 1pm at the funeral home with the Rev. Wilford Simeral officiating.
