Christopher Jarrett Alvis, 37, formerly of Toronto, OH, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 in Steubenville, OH.

Chris was born Nov. 11, 1979, son of the late Alfred Sayles, Jr. and Cheryl Lynn Alvis Toney.

He was 1998 graduate of Toronto High School and he attended Akron University before enlisting in the US Army in 1999.

Chris spent 7 years in the Army as a SSG with the Airborne Army Ranger 3rd Battalion 75th Regiment stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. During his tours overseas he was stationed in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq as a Non Commissioned Officer.

Some of Chris medals and awards included: Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, Ranger Tab, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Mechanic/Parachute Badge and Air Assault Badge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael R. Alvis.

Chris leaves behind his son, Justin Xavier Alvis of Macon, GA; his aunt, Denise A. (Pete) Cain; his four cousins, Carl Cain, Shawn Cain, Steven Cain and Jason Alvis. He also leaves behind other family, many friends and Army brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 9 am at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home 701 Findley St. in Toronto. Pastor Raul Diaz will officiate and burial will follow at 11 am in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, PA with full military honors.

The funeral home will be open Friday morning at 8 am for anyone wanting to come visit prior to the service. The service will start promptly at 9 am as there is a strict burial schedule we must follow at the cemetery.
