David E. Bates, 77, of Toronto, OH, passed away Sept. 20, 2016 in the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.

David was born Dec. 29, 1938 in Dola, WV, son of the late Donovan Daryl and Margaret Molly (Barker) Bates.

He was retired from Weirton Steel Corp., where he worked in the BOF Mechanical Dept.

David enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers games on TV and in the past he enjoyed attending the Toronto High School Red Knights football games.

David served his country in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence G. Benny Bates, who passed away in 2015.

Surviving are his daughters, Linda Susan (Bates) Bowland and her husband Charles Spot Bowland of Richmond, OH and Cathy (Cook) Baker and her husband Bob of Toronto; his son, James Ronald Cook and his wife Carolyn of WA; his sister, Joann and her husband Paul Connor, with whom David resided and his brother Marvin L. Bates both of Toronto; his four grandchildren, Michael Bates, Amy Schmidt, Jason and Kevin Baker and four great-grandchildren, Adam, Tyler, Noah and Luke.

Visitation will be held on Friday Sept. 23, 2016 from 4 - 8 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home 701 Findley St. in Toronto. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 am til time of Davids Funeral Service at 12 noon at the funeral home. Pastor Rob Minto will officiate the service and burial will follow in Island Creek Cemetery in Toronto.
