Elaine M. Lani Smith, 62, of Steubenville, OH, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at her home surrounded by family, after a courageous 4-year battle with breast cancer.

Lani was born Dec. 24, 1959, in Steubenville, daughter of the late Warren Koon and Virginia (Montgomery) Koon Harris.

She retired from Schiappa & Co. where she worked for 43 years as a private executive assistant. Lani was a 40-year member and Treasurer of the Pottery Addition Vol. Fire Dept. and Auxiliary.

Lani lived life to the fullest and she enjoyed traveling, hiking, and kayaking. She was the happiest when she was cooking for a houseful of family during the holidays.

In addition to her parents, Lani was preceded in death by two sisters, Karen Gogul and Loretta Swiger.

Lani leaves behind her husband, Shawn M. Smith, whom she married Aug. 23, 1980; daughter, Amanda Smith of Columbus, OH; sister, Patty Luparello of Wintersville, OH; brother, Donald (Cathy) Koon of New Port Richey, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, Sept. 16 from 11 am to 1 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH. Lanis Memorial Service will follow at 1 pm.
