Obituary

Eugene C. Omaits, Sr., 74, of Smithfield, OH, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008 in East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. Eugene was born April 16, 1934 in Piney Fork, OH, son of the late Carl C. and Josephine D. (Kausic) Omaits. Sgt. Omaits was a Veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Korean War as Chief of the Artillery, Sgt., Battery A 969th Field Artillery Battalion and was awarded the Good Conduct National Defense Service Medal along with the Korean Service Medal W/I Bronze Star United Nations Service Medal. He was the founder and past president of the Jefferson Co. Veterans Association, founder and past president of the Fort Friendship Veterans Memorial Museum at Freindship Park, past president and a member of the Piney Fork American Legion Post # 735; he was a member of the Korean War Veterans Assoc. Ohio Valley Chapter # 70, Yorkville VFW Post 4811, Farm Bureau Council, past advisor of Golden Horseshoe 4-H Club. Eugene also worked Ohio Ferro Alloy and then retired from Wheeling-Pitt Steel in 1994. Eugene was awarded the Jefferson Co. Veteran of the Year in 2001. In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Omaits. Eugene is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Joe) Mull of Mansfield, OH, son Gene (Margie) Omaits of Smithfield, OH, son Bob (Dona) Omaits also of Smithfield, OH, daughter Suzanne (Alan) Stuart of New Alexandria, OH, daughter Carlyn (Tim) Maize of Dover, OH; his two sisters, Dorothy Yourkowski of Renton, WA and Shirley (Don) Stewart of Pataskala, OH. Eugene is also survived by his grandchildren, Elicia, Chuck, Mike, Steven, Daniel, Ryan, Jacob, Ben, Isaac, Abe, Aubrea, Emma, Sydney, Erica, Rachel, Joe, Jackie, Melissa, Kim, Kyle, Isabella and Micah; his great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Noah, Katie and Carter. Visitation for Eugene will be held on Tuesday, August 12 from 2-4pm and 6-9pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH. Eugene's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 13 at 1pm at the Meadowbrook Church of God in Rayland, OH with the Rev. Marvin Schooler officiating. There will be an additional hour of visitation from 12-1pm at the Church prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Northern Cemetery in Smithfield with the Piney Fork American Legion providing full Military Graveside Honors.
