George Brent Sampson,77, of Toronto, OH, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 14, 2021, in the Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville, OH.
He was born Oct. 2, 1944, in Cameron, WV, son of the late Bill and Allie (Blake) Sampson.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Barnhart and Barbara Bailey, and brothers, Bill, Jim, Sam, and Bob Sampson.
George is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 54 years, Sharon (Hyndman) Sampson whom he married Oct. 7, 1967; daughters, Suzanne (David) Hope, Jr. of Bloomingdale, OH, and Kerianne (Kevin) Habbit of Steubenville; son, Eric (Kristy) Sampson of Salem, OH; grandchildren, Kayla (Dalton) Sindeldecker, Matthew Hope, Kaydence Habbit, Camden Sampson, Elizabeth Hope, and Karlie Sampson; sisters, Bonnie (Charles) McConnell of Palmetto, FL, and Karen Sue (Don) Smith of Ocala, FL; brother, Mike Sampson of Steubenville, as well as beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was a 1964 graduate of Steubenville Big Red where he played football and continued to support the team after graduation. He was the Football Booster President in 1984 when they won the State Championship. He was the biggest fan in the stands when it came to any sport or band performance his children and grandchildren participated in.
He was so proud to snowbird to Florida with his wife every winter for the last 11 years, where they made many friends who have become more like family.
George was previously employed by Ft. Steuben Metals and retired from the Weirton Steel Corp. in 1994. He attended Bell Chapel United Methodist Church.
We were blessed by his larger-than-life personality and our world is forever changed without him with us but know that he is celebrating in Heaven.
Family and friends will be received Thursday, Dec. 16 from 5 to 8 PM at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto where his funeral service will be held Friday at 11 AM. Rev. Jeff Proya will officiate, and burial will follow in the Island Creek Cemetery in Toronto.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Bell Chapel United Methodist Church.
