Gilbert Gilmore Powell, Jr., 82, of Smithfield, OH, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 14, 2025. He was a beloved cousin, loyal friend, and a cherished member of the Smithfield community whose presence brought light, kindness, and steadfast faith to all who knew him.

Born in Wheeling, WV on October 28, 1943, Gilbert was the son of the late Gilbert Powell Sr. and Audrey Powell. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1963 and soon after answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1967.

A lifelong resident of Smithfield, Gilbert dedicated over two decades of service as a custodian at Bank One. Known for his gentle spirit and humble heart, he also gave generously of his time to his church and community.

Gilbert was a devoted member of St. Paul AME Church until it closed, at which time he joined Shaffer Chapel AME Church where he has remained a faithful member.

His love for history and community was evident in his involvement with the Apple Festival Committee and the Historical Society of Smithfield. He found joy in collecting photographs and was actively learning to play the keyboard, often sharing his progress with a smile that warmed the hearts of those around him.

Gilbert is survived by a host of cousins and friends who will deeply miss his thoughtful conversations, his unwavering support, and his bright spirit. He was especially close to his cousins John Mattox and Suzanne Evans, and held a treasured friendship with Brenda Harris, Jada Dalton, and Kristi Cochran.

Visitation for Gilbert is scheduled for Thursday, November 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield. Funeral services will commence at 12:00 noon, officiated by Rev. Melody Essex. Military Honors will be presented at the funeral home by the Hopedale American Legion Post #682. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Colerain, Ohio. www.jefosterfh.com
