Obituary

Mary Katherine (Torok) Bartek of Bradley, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013, surrounded by family. Mary entered the world on October 25, 1927, ultimately becoming one of thirteen children. She spent the majority of her life in Bradley, Ohio, where she saw the community change from a bustling coal mining town to a quiet collection of a few homes. She married Eugene Bartek on April 12, 1947. The couple would celebrate more than 50 years of marriage before Eugene's passing. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Jody Bartek of Adena, Ohio, and daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Frank Kovach of Smithfield, Ohio. Mary spent many joyful years with her now-grown grandchildren and their significant others: Jennifer Bartek, Allison Bartek and Jeremy Long, Kim and Dan Miller and Frank and Karyn Kovach. She was also blessed to play a key role in the lives of her six adoring great-grandchildren, Taylor, Madison and Corey Neavin; Cole Miller; and Frank and Charlie Kovach. Mary was also preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Elizabeth Szilagyi Torok; sisters Elizabeth Torok and Margaret (Torok) Klapka; brothers Joseph, Andrew, John, Julius, Harry, and Steve. Surviving are sisters Bertha (Dave) Ingler and Irene Rock; brothers Jim (Bev) Torok; and Louis (Vi) Torok. Mary was a class of 1945 graduate of Smithfield High School. She spent many years working in the Smithfield, Dillonvale and Bradley Co-Op stores, where she spoke multiple Eastern European languages as she assisted the largely immigrant members of the community. She was a very involved and devoted member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Smithfield until its closing, serving as president of the women's club and choir member for several years. She remained a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Dillonvale. Mary dutifully worked at the election polls for many years, and set an example of civic engagement and hard work for her family. Mary enjoyed cheering on her favorite teams, the Buckeye Local Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. She will be fondly remembered for her gardening skills that brightened her neighborhood each year, her storytelling and her wonderful sense of humor. The laughs over the years serve as a warm reminder for her family and friends of a well-lived life. Calling hours are 2 - 8 pm on Tuesday, September 10, at J.E. Foster Funeral Home, 107 Hill Street, Smithfield, OH 43948. The viewing will begin with a prayer service. Mary's funeral mass will be held at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Dillonvale at 10 am on Wednesday with Fr. Dale Tornes as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Historical Society of Smithfield, Ohio, P.O. Box 32, Smithfield, Ohio, 43948. Condolences may be offered on our website www.jefosterfh.com
