Mary E. “Cissy” Freeman, 80, a life-long resident of Smithfield, OH, was called home to the Lord on Friday, August 28, 2026, in the Hospice of Cincinnati Inpatient Care Center in Blue Ash.

Cissy was born January 5, 1946, in Martins Ferry, OH, daughter of the late Frank J. Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth E. (Williams) Smith.

Cissy graduated from Smithfield High School and worked for the Community Action Council in her hometown of Smithfield, where she was also a member of St. Paul AME Church.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, William L. “Bill” Freeman, who passed November 24, 2014, and by her brothers, Arthur Smith and infant Paul, and her son-in-law, John Sadar.

Cissy leaves behind her brother, Frank J. Smith, III and his wife Annette (Mason); her nieces, Leah Murphy and husband Edward J. Murphy, III, and their daughter Emily, Terra Purdy and husband Steve Purdy, and their daughter Penelope, Frances Sadar and her son John F. Sadar, and Jody Shoemaker and husband Dale, and their children, Nicholas and Pamela.

Aunt Cissy will be missed by close friends and extended family. 

Private burial services will be held at the Northern Cemetery in Smithfield, OH, at the convenience of Mary’s family. Her arrangements are in the care of the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH.
