Mary Elizabeth Matthews, better known to all as Liz, 86, of Bloomingdale, OH, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at Country Club Manor in Steubenville, OH.

Liz was born Dec. 10, 1939, in Bloomingdale, daughter of the late Alonzo, Sr. and Elsie (Oiler) Wilson.

After graduating from Wayne High School, Liz was a homemaker raising her boys. She later went to work for Buckeye Local Schools, in the cafeteria dept., spending most of her career at Smithfield Elementary School. A lifelong member of Weems Community Chapel Church, she enjoyed playing and coaching softball. As an adult she played for R&F Coal and the Biggio Girls, and she also coached a girls’ softball team in Smithfield.

Liz was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter “Bud”, Wes and Dean Wilson, and two sisters, Ruth Wise and Dorothy Ellen Garrett.

She leaves behind her three sons, Rick Matthews of Wintersville, OH, Gary and wife Sharon Matthews of Dellroy, OH, and Todd and wife Patty Matthews of Steubenville; sister, Judy Brodzinsky of Wintersville; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Joe) Berry, Todd Matthews, Caitlin Matthews, Justin (Chandra) Matthews, Rebekah Matthews and Ashlee (Patrick) Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Laci, Logan, Ezeikel and Emerson and great-great-grandson Lincoln.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, Sept. 28 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH, with additional visitation on Tuesday from 10 am until time of services at 11 am. Shaun Ford will officiate and burial will follow in the Holly Memorial Gardens in Colerain, OH.
