Melvin E. "Pappy" Carpenter, 73, of Toronto, Ohio passed away Saturday March 19, 2011 at Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville. Melvin was born May 9, 1937 in Brilliant, Ohio, son of the late Otis and Olive Jackson Carpenter. He was a retired employee of Weirton Steel Corp, working in the Strip Steel Dept. He was a Christian by faith, a member of the Weirton Steel 25 yr. Club and loved working on cars with his brothers.In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his sister Grace Long and by his two brothers James and Louis Carpenter. Surviving are his wife Virginia (Toland) Carpenter, whom he married on Nov. 30, 1955, his son Roger Carpenter of Irondale, Ohio, his daughter Melva (Ron) Devore of Mingo Jct., Ohio; two granddaughters, Shawnna Carpenter Newburn and Shannon (Richard) Gardner of Toronto, two great-grandchildren, Jace Carpenter and Rilee Gardner. Two brothers Otis Carpenter of Brilliant and Richard Carpenter of Toronto. Visitation for Melvin will be Tuesday March 22nd, from 2-4 and 6-9 pm., at the J. E. Foster Funeral Home, Inc., 701 Findley St. Toronto, Ohio; where Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am. Pastor Jim Rhodes will officiate the service and entombment will follow in Ft.
