Obituary

Patricia M. Burns, 63, of Toronto, OH, passed away Wednesday, August 08, 2012 in Steubenville, OH at Trinity Medical Center West. She was the wife of Frederick P. Burns.Pat was born January 17, 1949 in Butler, PA, daughter of the late Thomas E. and Beatrice (Didion) Swartzlander. She was raised by Roy and Ethel Haas, her Aunt and Uncle, after her parent's early death.Pat was a graduate of North Allegheny HS in 1966, Steubenville College in 1970 and Dayton University in 1977 with a Masters in Education. She taught in the Edison Local School District at Edison Elementary and also at St. Francis Central School in Toronto. She was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Toronto, OH.In her later years she volunteered for Mended Hearts at Trinity, she made many items for Akron Children's Hospital and Cleveland Ronald McDonald House, pillows for heart patients at Trinity, numerous quilting projects at St. Francis Church, afghans for Urban Mission, Hospice Bears, blankets for Jefferson Co. Project Linus and was a Reading Buddy at Karaffa School. Few saw Pat without cloth and yarn in her hands. Her favorite thing was receiving coupons for JoAnn Fabrics to make items for the above charities. Pat made numerous baby items for expecting mothers. Her life centered on helping others and never wanting any recognition.In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her sister Sandy Johnstone.Pat is survived by her husband, Frederick Paul Burns whom she married on August 23, 1969; they were the first couple to be Wed at Christ the King Chapel on the Campus of Steubenville University. She is also survived by her two sons, Jonathan Paul and his wife Jennifer of Springboro, OH, and Sean Fredrick and his wife Sarah of Hoboken, NJ. The loves of her life were her four grandchildren, Brooke Elizabeth, Anthony Jonathan and infant twins Bailey Scarlett and Jack Patrick Burns. Pat is also survived by her sister Gloria Ann Pearce of Renfrew, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.Visitation for Pat will be held on Friday, August 10 from 4-8pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH. Funeral Liturgy with Mass for Pat will be held on Saturday, August 11 at 10am at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Toronto, OH with Fr. Thomas Vennitti as Celebrant. There will be additional visitation on Saturday morning in the back of the Church from 9:15-10am. Burial will follow in Island Creek Cemetery in Toronto, OH.Memorial donations in Pat's name may be offered to any of the following: Mended Hearts c/o James Thompson 307 Grandview St. Mingo Jct., OH 43938; St. Joseph Bears 1225 N.
