Obituary

Phyllis (Smith) Selman, 87, of Toronto, OH, peacefully passed away at home on December 12, 2025, and has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Phyllis was a cherished member of the Bell Chapel United Methodist Church on State Route 213 in Steubenville, OH. She devoted much of her time to her church community, volunteering daily with various activities, including Busy Needles, folding and mailing newsletters, participating in women's groups, bible study, the food pantry, and Vacation Bible School.

Born in 1938 in New Waterford, OH, Phyllis was the daughter of the late George and Anna Mae (Bush) Smith. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Ethel Chamberlain, Mildred Booth, and Annabelle Chamberlain.

She graduated from New Waterford High School, class of 1956. Phyllis grew up on a farm, where she fondly recalled feeding chickens, slopping hogs, and walking the cattle. Her life was filled with stories and laughter.

Phyllis fell in love with Raymond Henry Selman at Camp Aldersgate, which marked the beginning of a wonderful journey together. They sparked a romance that created a beautiful family, celebrating 68 loving years of marriage. Together, they traveled, fished, and enjoyed gardening while nurturing a profound love that remained evident as they held hands and exchanged kisses every single day.

A loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and great-great-grandma, Phyllis raised her five children to be strong and independent, blessing many along her journey. In addition to her husband Ray, she is survived by her children, Raymond D. Selman and Mary (Segle) Selman of Toronto, James Selman and companion Linda Nichols of Huron, OH, Leonard Selman and Terri (Piatt) Selman of Steubenville, Phyllis (Selman) Westfall of Toronto, and Companion John Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA, and Rebekah (Selman) Stout and Billy Stout of Eugene, OR, and brother, Clifford S. VanKirk of New Waterford.

Phyllis was also a proud grandmother to 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She always had room in her heart for more to love, and her generosity extended beyond family to all those she met.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11 am at Bell Chapel United Methodist Church, 3419 State Route 213, Steubenville, OH 43952.

Phyllis touched the lives of everyone around her with her crafting talents, from quilting and sewing to crocheting and making candy. She cherished her friendships, frequently meeting with her senior class for many years. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will be deeply missed but forever celebrated by those who knew her.

Arrangements for Phyllis are in the care of the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH.
