Obituary

Robert Gene 'Stoney' Phillippi, 79, passed away at midnight on Wednesday June 25, 2008 while residing with his daughter and son-in-law.He was born on March 27, 1929 in Piney Fork, Ohio, son of the late Fredo and Georgette (Bakeroot) Phillippi.Robert grew up in Piney Fork, where he graduated from Smithfield H.S. in 1947. Shortly after he entered coal mining as his profession. Short lived, he enlisted in the U. S. Army for four years, where he was stationed in England. After his discharge, Stoney married his high school sweetheart, Helenka Regiec in 1951, living briefly in Cleveland, Ohio and then returning to Piney Fork and Consol Coal. He also was a delivery man for 'Victor's Quick Wash Bleach when the mines were idle. He was married for 47 years until Helen died on March 12, 1998 at the age of 68.He retired in 1987 after 38 years in various coal mines in the valley. In addition, his love of the accordion provided many hours of entertainment and fun, surrounded by many dear friends. He was an avid bowler for many years, where he also encountered many dear and loving friends. He loved playing poker with his very special and loving NY family. He was commander and then treasure of the Piney Fork American legion, recently receiving his 50 year plaque. Many hours were volunteered as bar keeper. He was a life time member of the Pine Valley Sportsman's Club where he also enjoyed the pleasure of knowing dear and special people.Stoney will be greatly missed by his family and many friends that he encountered throughout his life. In addition to his parents and his wife, Stoney was preceded in death by his sister Dolores Kasarda in 1980. He is survived by three children, Nancy (Chaz) Morgan, Scott Phillippi, Dino (Rhonda) Phillippi. His brother Tony (Judy) Phillippi. Two grandchildren and many special and dear nieces and friends.Friends may call on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 pm., at the J. E. Foster Funeral Homes, Inc., 107 Hill St. Smithfield; where services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am. Rev. Wilford Simeral will officiate his service. Burial will follow in Northern Cemetery in Smithfield, where full military graveside honors will be provided by the Piney Fork American Legion Post #735. There will be a Celebration of Stoney's life following the burial at the Piney Fork American Legion Post. In lieu of flowers, online condolences may be expressed to the family at: www.jefosterfh.com
