Roberta "Frances " Bruce Hanna 89, long time resident of Smithfield, Ohio, died Saturday March March 13, 2004, at Heartland Nursing Home in Lansing, Ohio. Mrs. Hanna was born August 31, 1914 in Georgetown, S.C. , daughter of the late Sarah and Robert Bruce Wynne. She later made her home in Smithfield, with her mother and step-father the late George Lloyd. Mrs. Hanna, known to her friends as Frances, was a woman of many interests. During World War ii she worked at Jack and Heintz in Cleveland, a manufacturer of airplane parts. Following the war, she studied cosmetology and subsequently opened her own shop in 1945, in Smithfield. She operated the shop on Fourth St. for 40 years. Mrs. Hanna was active in many civic and state organizations. She served as Worthy Matron of the Smithfield Chapter of Eastern Stars # 332, was a member of the Volunteer Firemen's Auxiliary, the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School Advisory Board, the National Historical Society, the Smithfield Board of Elections, and was treasurer of the Smithfield Apple Festival until 1976. She ans a close friend, Julia Nightingale were the first co-chairpersons for the Apple Festival. She was a member of the Smithfield Methodist Church. Mrs. Hanna was a member and past president of the Smithfield Senior Women's Club OFWC, and in 1977, was elected President of the East Ohio River District, covering nine counties and sixty Clubs. Mrs. Hanna was an accomplished crafter, seamstress and quilter, with an extensive collection of fabrics. She enjoyed gardening, oil painting, collecting old books, and researching the history of women's roles in colonial times. She is survived by daughters; Patricia Backus of Hickory, Pa., and Sarah Crouch of Martins Ferry, Ohio; granddaughters; Michele Rusen of Parkersburg, WV., Karen Rusen of Pittsburgh, PA., Laura Seidler of Wheeling, WV., and Tracy Staats of Martins Ferry; Great-grandchildren; Natalie and Alexis Seidler, Kirk Auvil, Sarah Statts, and Perry and Simon Rusen-Morohovich. Mrs. Hanna was preceded in death by; her husband, Paul Hanna in 1980 and a daughter, Roberta in 1957. Friends and family may call on Wednesday March 17th , from 1:00 pm. to 4:00 pm. At the J. E. Foster Funeral Home, Inc. 107 Hill St. Smithfield, Ohio. Family and Friends are invited back to the Funeral Home at 6:30 pm., Wednesday evening for Frances's Celebration of Life Service. Rev.
