Obituary

Shirley A. Gillis, 92, of Toronto, OH, passed away Thursday Jan 25, 2018 in the Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville, OH.

Shirley was born Nov. 30, 1925 in Moorefield, OH, daughter of the late Carl and Flora (McBain) Wallace.

She was retired from the Toronto City School District, where she taught fourth grade for many years. She also taught in Elyria, OH and had worked at a neighborhood house in Utica, NY.

Shirley was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Toronto where she served as an Elder and Deacon, President of the Elizabeth Circle and former President of the Womens Association. She also worked for several years for the Salvation Army in Toronto.

She was a graduate of Wayne High School in Bloomingdale, OH. She received a B.S. degree from Schauffler College in Social Work and a B.S. in Education from Kent State University.

Shirley was also a member of the Ohio Association of Retired Teachers, the Jefferson Co. Retired Teachers and a member of the Three Arts Club.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Gillis in 1983; her brother, Keith Wallace and his wife Countess; brother-in-law, Charles Gillis and his wife Carrie and by her in-laws, Jesse and Dorothy Gillis.

Surviving are her two sons, Kevin (Roxanne) Gillis of Toronto and Keith (Judy) Gillis of Las Vegas, NV; her granddaughter, Jennifer Gillis and her fianc Matt Gooch and his son Brayden Gooch; two nieces, Shelly Frankowski and Cindy Nitz both of Cuyahoga Falls, OH and one nephew, Bryon Wallace of NC.

Family and friends will be received Sunday Jan. 28, 2018 from 12 - 3 pm at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto. Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 1 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Tyler Bayless will officiate and burial will follow in Toronto Union Cemetery.

Shirleys family would like to thank the staff of Memories of Marie Assisted Living, where she has resided for the past two years, for their excellent and compassionate care.
