Sylvia Marie (Putnam) Austin, 89, of Toronto, OH, passed away on Friday Oct. 9, 2026, in the Valley Hospice Care Center in Steubenville, OH.

She was born on Dec. 15, 1936, in Toronto, daughter of the late Russell and Alice (Goddard) Putnam. Sylvia was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray, whom she had been married to for 61 years, her daughter, Dianna Coburn, son, Randall Austin, sister, Pearl Phelps, and brothers, Raymond and Romey Goddard.

Sylvia was known for her wedding and special-occasion cakes in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as for providing tax services from the 1970s through the 1990s.

She was a member of Toronto’s First Methodist Church and sang with the Stanton Community Choir for 25 years, traveling to a different destination each summer. Her final trip was a two-week European tour that included performances in four countries, accompanied by her husband, Ray.

Sylvia is survived by six grandchildren, Jessica (Tracey) Elder, Brandi (Dennis) Rawson, Shelby (David) Richards, Randall (Jackie) Austin, Misty (Brian) Kubicki, Justin (Marie) Austin and nine great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A service will follow at 1 p.m., led by the Rev. Kevin Rinkes and Pastor Susan Clegg, with interment at Island Creek Cemetery in Toronto.
