William "Bill" Donald McHugh Sr., 87, of Hilliard, OH, formerly of Smithfield, peacefully passed away at his daughter's home on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, to William R. and Catherine Brown McHugh, Bill built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. He graduated from Smithfield High School, earned a degree in Journalism from the University of Steubenville, and a Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of Dayton. Bill proudly served his country in the Army Reserves.

Bill's life's work was teaching and coaching. For 32 years he inspired students in English and Journalism at Buckeye Local Schools and guided countless athletes as a basketball and football coach. He had a gift for seeing potential in young people and mentoring them to succeed.

On August 8, 1959, Bill married the love of his life, Patricia Rusiecki, at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Dillonvale, OH. Their 58 years together were filled with love, laughter, and devotion until Pat's passing.

Bill's greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his children Don McHugh, Melissa (Dean) Headley, and Amy Allen, all of Hilliard, OH, and Dennis McHugh of Columbus, OH; his cherished grandchildren Kailey (Matt) Smith, Cameron Headley, Keaton Headley, Matthew Allen, Sydney Allen, and Dylan Allen; and his beloved great-grandson Rowan Smith. Being "Pappy" was his favorite role of all.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life on Friday, September 19, from 3:00–7:00 p.m. at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Jim Monogioudis will officiate and burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove, OH.

Bill's family will forever remember his kindness, dry humor, and steady guidance. His legacy of love, mentorship, and dedication will live on in everyone whose life he touched.
