Charles E. Glasure

Charles “Chuck” Eugene Glasure of Toronto, Ohio, died peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2020 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 87 years old.

Charles was the first child of Mary Scribbens Glasure and Earl Franklin Glasure. He was born on April 4, 1933 in Toronto, Ohio, and had four siblings: Robert (d. 10/13/92; Sharon), Earl (Marilyn), Dolores Jeans (Fred) and James (Robin). Charles was a 1951 graduate of Toronto High School, attended Ohio University and graduated from Steubenville Business College. From there, he went to the United States Naval Training Center. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Where does one begin to share the stories of a life so long-lived? Chuck started this way: “My first car was a 1948 dark blue Dodge Coupe Cadet. I was able to buy it because I worked all my life: When I was a boy, I pulled weeds from a neighbor’s flower bed on Biltmore Avenue. When I was in middle school, I pumped gas at the station on the corner. When I was in high school, I worked at Follansbee Steel, where Titanium is now. So, when I graduated from high school, I bought the Coupe Cadet.”

Of the years that followed, he said, “Ollie got me into politics. He was mayor of Toronto. Ollie, Don Clarke, Sr., Ernie from Ernie’s Jewelers…the four of us would go down to Mazeroski’s in Rayland every Sunday morning. We’d play 9 holes, then go home, take a shower, get dressed and go to church. That was the First United Methodist Church in Toronto. After church, we’d go back and play the other nine. Ollie also taught me how to drink a beer and a chaser. Before that, I only had beer. I wish I’d never started on that stuff.”

Charles was a charter member and past president of the Toronto Jaycees and the Bowie (MD) Jaycees, a member of the Sales Executive Club in Washington, DC, and a Toronto City Councilman. He was proud to be a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and the American Legion V.F.W. He was also a Nationwide insurance salesman, National Sales Manager of Arcal Chemical Company, and a steelworker. He never passed a Salvation Army kettle or a vet with a poppy without contributing.

He leaves behind a son, Geoffrey (Julie Smith), a daughter, Beverly Glasure Dempsey (Joseph), three grandchildren (Patricia, Owen and Caitlin), one great-grandchild (Elijah), his dear sister Dookie and two brothers. He had many nephews and nieces, including Bobby Glasure, Denyse Jeans Kenney, Shelly Rogers, and Sheryl Jeans Vuvach, who were lovingly attentive toward him in his last year.

Charles will be interred in Island Creek Cemetery at a private service, The Rev. C. Robert Meyer, officiant. Arrangements are being made by J.E. Foster Funeral Home, Toronto, Ohio. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Salvation Army, 332 N 4th St, Steubenville, OH 43952.
