Doris Martaus Obituary

Doris Spilecki Martaus, recently a resident of the Meadows of Cadiz, and formerly a resident of Toronto, OH, passed away on April 12, 2024.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna (Turoff) and Gregory Spilecki, brothers Alex, Robert, and Chester Spilecki, son Daniel Joseph Martaus, grandson Craig Martaus, and beloved husband Joe.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Spilecki Brancazio, and her children, Bob (Lisa) Martaus of Mesa, AZ, Mariann Martaus of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Jim (Amy) Martaus of Toronto, 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

Doris was born in the Polish community of Rockyside near New Cumberland, WV, on May 6, 1928. She graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1946 and subsequently worked with her sister Helen a as a decorator on the Blue Willow line at the Homer Laughlin China Company in Newell, WV.

Doris met “her Joe” at a polka dance at the New Cumberland VFW.  They were married for thirty-three years until Joe’s death in 1989.

Doris and Joe were members of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Toronto, where Doris was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club. Doris and the ladies of the Women’s club could regularly be found in the church kitchen making pirohy, haluski, cabbage rolls, nut bread, and other delicious Slovak food for church events.

Doris enjoyed embroidery, baking, reading, and especially travel. Doris traveled to many places throughout the United States and went on many adventures. She especially loved visiting far away family in Mesa, AZ and Charleston, SC, and lavished almost as much attention on her “grand-dogs” as her grandchildren.

Doris Spilecki Martaus leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
