James Winland Hunt, Sr., 96, of Toronto, OH, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021 in the Gables Care Center in Hopedale, OH, surrounded by his family.

 

Jim was born Dec. 29, 1924 in Steubenville, OH, son of the late, Earl Dallas and Florence (Winland) Hunt.

 

He was retired from the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. where he worked as a Supervisor in the Utilities Dept. Jim was a Veteran of the US Navy having served his country in WWII as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Troop Transport.

 

Jim was Protestant by faith and his memberships included the Toronto American Legion Post # 86 and the Toronto Masonic Lodge 582 F&AM where he was a 32nd Degree Mason.

 

Jim loved nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking and he completed the entire Appalachian Trail at the age of 64 with his oldest son, Jim, Jr. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and great-grandfather. His family and his faith in God were his main motivations. Jim also loved cooking and gardening and he was a jack of all trades.

 

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane (Huber) Hunt; brother, George Hunt; two sisters, Savannah Kline and Virginia McAfee.

 

Jim leaves behind his wife, Naomi Ruth (Mayers) Hunt; three sons, James Winland Hunt, Jr. of Mingo Jct., OH, John Dallas, Laurence Elliott (Christine) Hunt both of Toronto; daughter, Mary Ann (Vernon) Beegle of Weirton, WV; three step-daughters, Stephanie Cunningham of SC, Valerie Cribbs of VA and Vickie (Steve) Eversole of MI; five grandchildren, Aaron (Julia) Hunt and their children, Stefan and Santino, Sheena (Mike) Czesztyicki and their children, Brayden and Kowen, Brittany Hunt and her son, Preston, Mike (Elizabeth) Beegle and their children, Savannah, Brandan and Michael, Michelle (Steve) Hinchee and their children, Kayla (Tyler) Warrick and Brett Hinchee; step-grandson, Kevin (Lila) Graziano and their son, Carter; step-granddaughter, Delany Cribbs.

 

Family and friends will be received Wednesday, May 12 from 4 PM to 8 PM at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH. Jim’s funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 AM at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation Thursday from 10 AM to 11 AM. Jim’s son, Larry Hunt will officiate, and his burial will be held at the convenience of his family. Military Honors will be presented by the Toronto American Legion at the funeral home.
