Stephen Romey Obituary

Stephen Mark Romey of Toronto, OH passed away October 5, 2020 in the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH.

Steve was born February 27, 1957, in Steubenville, son of the late William and Virginia ‘Ginger’ (Gaffney) Romey.

Steve is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 40 years Bernadette Romey, his son Michael and daughter in law Michelle Romey and grandchildren Isabella, Penelope, and Amelia Romey of Toronto, OH, and his daughter Merideth and son in law Aaron Parry and grandchildren Zoe and Rock Parry of Charleston, SC.  Steve is also survived by his 3 siblings Terry (Pamela) Romey, Cynthia Romey, and Chris Romey, and his sister in law Jane Romey.

Steve was born and raised in Toronto, OH, and he became a fixture of his small hometown. A local football and baseball hero, he went on to play professional baseball and eventually became a lifelong educator and coach. Steve was retired from Bellaire City Schools where he was Principal. He was currently a teacher and the Principal of the Jefferson Co. Alternative School in Steubenville.

Steve was passionate about mentoring and educating his students and players. It was a rare occasion to be out and not run into someone he had taught or coached over the years. He made a difference in the lives of countless children, and that is something to truly be proud of and cherished.

Besides education, politics, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Steve’s true love in life were his 5 grandchildren. He would speak often of how they ‘had his heart,’ and he truly adored them.  He would light up being around them, and they loved every minute they got to spend with their ‘Big PapPap.’ Whether it was putting on makeup and playing dolls with the girls or talking football with Rock, he loved every minute of it.

Steve was a believer in God, country, and family, and he loved them all fiercely. He was never afraid to speak up for what he believed in, and he could always be counted on for a witty remark or off the wall humor. He made the world a lot more interesting, and he will be missed dearly by so many.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday, October 7, 2020 from 3 PM to 7 PM at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Toronto, OH. Private services will be held, and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
