Obituary

Steven Lee West, born October 28, 1960, the youngest son of Kenny & Tillie (Dalpiaz) West of Uhrichsville passed suddenly on April 12, 2022.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dana Smitley West, son, Luke West (daughter-in-law, Natalie West), daughter, Leah L’Ecuyer (son-in-law, Ben L’Ecuyer) and two granddaughters, Margot and Bridgette L’Ecuyer.

He has gone to Heaven to be reunited with his family including his parents, brothers - Ron and Rick, nephew, Jason West, great nephew, Joey West, and great niece, Jolie Mathews. Paula Smitley, Steve’s mother-in-law and Oliver Yuen, brother-in-law, also predecease him.

Steve graduated from Claymont and Buckeye in 1979, and Kent State Tuscarawas with an Engineering degree in 1981. After an internship at General Electric, he worked in Store Development for Associated Grocers in Dennison and the Peter J. Schmitt Company in Akron. Further career opportunities led him to Chicago where he forged a thirty-year partnership with Richard James Abrham of rja/architects and formed his own Architectural Engineering & Design firm, The Precedent Group, in 1992. Dedication to his work was admirable, as he was able to cultivate a successful business in architecture and engineering completing many notable projects, in the local community and across the United States. He served his local church in many ways and enjoyed conversation with everyone he met.

Steve was a loving and devoted husband, father, “Papa”, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. Having first met in Sunday School at Grace Methodist Church, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Dana Smitley, on July 25, 1981. Together, they set out to build a full and wonderful life. As newlyweds, he designed and built a house with Dana where he was fortunate to welcome home two beautiful children.

In 1998 after career moves to Chicago & Columbus, Steve saw an opportunity to move his family “back home” to Tappan Lake.  Living near his oldest brother, Ron (wife Barb), and Rick (wife Irma) and their families, he was able to introduce to his children all the wonderful experiences and adventures of lake life that he had enjoyed as a child. From April to October, you could expect him to be in his swim shorts and boat shoes, picking kids up from school, and heading straight out onto the water. Those who treasure these memories include Barb & Ted Doll of Tappan Lake, Kady & Erik Ward of Medina, Nikohlas Gedeon of Mantua, and Irma West, Cody West, Kassey, Brian, Jasey & Jiada Mathews, Bob Smitley, Jill Yuen, Rob Smitley, all of New Philadelphia. Steve’s sense of humor and joy was evident in his demeanor.

Steve and Dana were also fortunate enough to enjoy many travel adventures around the world and had recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in Maui and their granddaughters’ birthdays at Disney World.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Steve’s life at the Grace United Methodist Church fellowship hall on Saturday, April 23rd. Calling hours begin at 11 am, followed by a Celebration of life at 12:30.
