Walter Morehead Obituary

Walter I. Morehead, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, OH, passed away peacefully December 5th, 2019 at Riverside Manor Nursing Facility Newcomerstown, OH. 

 

Walter was born April 12, 1929 in Martins Ferry, OH, son of the late Irvin Albert and Bertha Marie Morehead. 

 

Walter was a lifetime resident of Mt. Pleasant. He attended the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church during his early years and later became a member of the Mt. Pleasant Friends Church. He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and played football but truly excelled playing basketball setting many records during high school. He was a Boy Scout earning 21 merit badges and he became an Eagle Scout.   

 

He was drafted into the Army, serving 19 months in Germany as a MP. Once home he joined the Reserves in Cadiz and Bellaire, OH. He was a proud American soldier who served his country for a total of 29 years.

 

Walter was employed by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and retired from the Yorkville Plant with 35 years of service. He was a bus driver, for 41 years, for the Buckeye Local School District. He was part time until moving to full time his last 6 years. He was also employed by Staffilino Chevrolet in Martins Ferry as a car transporter for many years.           

 

Walter was an avid lover of all sports which lead him to become a youth baseball umpire and a scorekeeper for the Mt. Pleasant High School basketball teams. He actively followed his grandchildren in all their sports, games, and activities. He loved traveling with his family and enjoyed many numerous road trips with his wife and in-laws. Our family was very blessed to have had him in our lives for so many years.                                       

 

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Pauline Baumberger Morehead, son Douglas Lee Morehead, daughter-in-law Brenda Krinke Morehead, two brothers, infant Morehead and John Morehead and a sister, Mary Morehead.                           

 

Surviving are his two children, W. Daniel Morehead of Mt. Carmel, IL and Darcy (Bill) Sanderson of Toronto, OH and daughter-in-law, Janice Porter Morehead. He is also survived by twin sisters, Martha Pergrim of Streetsboro, OH and Marie Smith of Sarasota, FL; his eight grandchildren, Derrek (Lorie) Morehead of Newcomerstown, Dustin Morehead of Jackson, WY, Zachary (Melissa) Morehead of Deerfield, OH, Danelle Morehead-Just of Forestville, PA, Amanda (Chris) Kujawa of Pittsburgh, PA, Daniel (Stephanie) Morehead of Haubstadt, IN and Colt (Makena) Morehead of Cave Creek, AZ;  sixteen great-grandchildren, Michael, Merada,  Maria, Shelby, Halle, Walker, Kalyn, Wylder, Bodee, Makenzie, Mason, Braxton, and Brogan; one great-great-grandchild, Gracen.                                 

 

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at the J.E. Foster Funeral Home in Smithfield, OH. Visiting hours will start at 2:00 pm with service to follow at 3:30 pm. Pastor Kenn Sickle will officiate and Military Honors will be presented by the Piney Fork American Legion.
