I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Estep family. I learned about Charlie's passing from a friend, and then through the local Pittsfield newspaper.

I knew Charlie here from the time I "signed on" with GE in 1968. I worked there in parallel with him on and off over the years until retirement. I always found him to be a really wonderful and interesting person to be connected to. He was the epitome of good manners, and offered a welcome smile whenever one had interactions with him.

When I think back I can truly say that Charlie was one of the most pleasant of persons. He truly brought the characteristics of measured thought and gentle action to any situation that I can come up with,

A good way to remember a person is how he or she is recalled. In this case it's with fondness, and with respect.

Sincerely,
R. E. Spalinger

I live in Charleston, SC and when we had meetings with SSP and GDAIS, Charlie was always a part of our team. Charlie was a GENTLEMAN and a FRIEND. My wife Ryckie and I will say a prayer tonight for Charlie. He is in GODS HANDS now. Sincerely, Lamar Watkins

I was so sorry to hear about Charlie. I knew him through the Tuesday Playgroup of retired folks who get together to enjoy outdoor activities in the Berkshires. Charlie was such a kind, gentle man and a delight to spend time with on our hiking, biking and snowshoeing outings. He had the greatest laugh, and we will miss him.

Having worked with Charlie for many years, I know he was a good engineer and manager. More importantly, he was a good friend who also gave of himself to the community. He will be missed by many of us in the Berkshires. We will continue to hold Marci in our thoughts and prayers.

Charlie and I (and our wives Bev and Marci) were close friends for some 40 years. We traveled together, played bridged together, and laughed together. Charlie was a man of great integrity, was very well organized, and was thorough in all of his responsibilities. As Manager of UK Programs within the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program, he earned the respect and trust of his GE colleagues, as well as his U.S. Navy and U.K. customers.

Charlie had many outdoor interests, including long-distance biking, hiking, snowshoeing, and softball. He was a well-respected volunteer conductor and treasurer with the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum, and he and I traveled to railroad museums around the east. Few new that he was also a talented builder of N-Scale model railroads, creating intricate track work and museum-quality scenery both at the Museum and in his homes. (His first layout was so sturdily-constructed that we had to cut it into small pieces to clear out the house when they moved.) His last, never-finished layout should receive more attention for its artistry and detail.

He really enjoyed children, especially his goddaughter Morgan Trowill, with whom he spent many enjoyable hours playing games of all kinds.

Charlie was a wonderful person, who left us all too soon.

Maureen and I were saddened by Charles passing. Our thoughts and sincere sympathy to Marcella and the Estep family for his loss. We became friends as volunteers at the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum. He served on the Board of Directors,Treasurer, and train Conductor. He was instrumental in helping establish tourist train passenger service, and provided excellent financial counsel as operations grew. Charles and I were both transplanted from Ohio to the Berkshires sharing many common interests including the Cleveland Indians. We made a number of enjoyable trips to Fenway Park when the Tribe played the Red Sox. Charles was very generous of his time on many projects that enriched our community. We have lost a fine friend. I am saddened to hear about Charlie. I worked with him at Ordnance for many years. He was a friend and a mentor. He was the kindest man I ever met. After he retired, I always looked forward to him stopping in front of my house to say hello as I mower my lawn. I strive every day to be more like Charlie and the gentle soul that he was.
